Assistant Director of Housekeeping | A Successful Career

By Harrison Barnes of http://www.facilitiescrossing.com/

There are various different kinds of jobs when you're looking into facilities manager jobs. In facilities management, you could be over healthcare facilities, medical facilities or other health facilities, for example. These are the most common kind that you'll find. But there are also housekeeping jobs. You could be the facilities manager for a large house or hotel. As the assistant director of housekeeping, you'll be in charge of other employees who clean rooms and take care of the maintenance of the facility.

Most of these jobs will be available for hotel chains. You'll find that most hotels have an assistant director of housekeeping. They'll be in charge of supervising many of the maids who clean rooms, sheets, etc. on a daily basis. You're bound to find all kinds of crazy things in hotel rooms. People do some of the strangest things when they're alone on business trips. Because they're away from all the people they know, they feel like they can get away with all kinds of things. They feel like they'll leave whatever actions they do behind them when they go. So when you go in to clean one of these rooms, you might find some crazy stuff and think the human race is doomed.

If you're cleaning and managing a large household, there are benefits to this. For one, you might not come across some of the crazy stuff you see in hotels. At the same time, rich people have their subtle and not so subtle nuances and they might be a very strange lot. So you might have to babysit some spoiled brat who has everything handed to him on a silver platter. If you have children, you might bring them to work with you and they'll be looked down on by the people living there. You'll have to watch as the son of this rich family patronizes your son of the same age simply because he comes from a poorer upbringing. As a housekeeper, you'll have to be able to tolerate this or will need to look for a new household to manage. You'll probably be dealing with some very demanding people who will judge and criticize your managing and cleaning abilities. So you'll have to take their abuse or once again move along to the next house.

You don't really think much about assistant director jobs. Most people aim for the director's position. There might be a few people who are already on the housekeeping staff who aim for one step up from their current position. They might be the only ones who actually covet the assistant director's spot. The assistant director will most likely be coveting the director's spot and will wait for her to move on so she can take her position. In the mean time, you're second in command. The good thing about being second in command is you have duties and responsibilities, but not nearly as many. If the owner is very demanding, they'll be demanding mostly to the director. If they're hard to deal with, they'll mostly deal with the director, so that won't really be your problem. Although you might find that the director will treat you the way she is treated. Oftentimes these traits get passed down from one tier to the next. So you'll have to deal with a harsh director because she was harshly dealt with.

There are some who will break the chain and take the beating only to turn around and deal with her subordinates in a respectful manner. It's hard to watch as her subordinates then walk all over her. This is a tragedy and you always want to step in and defend the poor director. But this is what they sign up for when they take the job.

Housekeeping is a pretty simple job and it might be best if you know a few different languages when getting involved. Most of the people who take housekeeping and maid service jobs speak broken English. They're the kinds of jobs that don't require a high level of English speaking, so people who immigrate from other countries are prone to taking up these kinds of jobs. You'll find a lot of people who speak Spanish-Spanish is probably the most common language among the employees in this line of work. So if you're bilingual and speak both English and Spanish, you'll do a lot better. Most people in this position might only speak broken English as well. They might be positions filled by maids who have simply worked their way up. Since all their employees speak Spanish, there might not be a need for an assistant director who is fluent in English. The director might still need to speak Spanish as the hotel manager or owner will most likely need to speak English.

So if you enjoy coordinating tasks for other employees and you are bilingual, you might be interested in this job. It'd be good if you know how to work well with others. If you've already served as maid for a time and know exactly what they're going through, you'll be better at delegating their tasks and helping them when they need it. So once again, it's always best to know the jobs you're managing. It's the same with assistant directors of housekeeping.
