The Excitement of Television Jobs
By Harrison Barnes of TVCrossing
Many tourists and visitors to Hollywood get excited about the idea of television and the television industry. They want to see and meet the stars and see what it is like behind the scenes. There are many things people do not know about TV jobs, and they would come to realize they are not as easy or enjoyable as most people think. Television jobs vary depending on the director and the budget. Whenever there is a larger budget, you will be working with a more experienced director and there will not be that financial burden that most directors have to deal with. Jobs in TV include the sound department, lighting, construction, cleanup crew, assistants, makeup artists, cinematographers, and many other jobs. If you are looking for a TV job, know that not every television job is the same, and many of them are not as enjoyable as you might think. I used to work as an extra or background talent for TV and films. There was one experience that left a bigger impression on my mind than most of the others. It was a great experience at first. There was a lot more money involved in this production; you could even tell by the way people acted and by the food we were served. We had gourmet food specially prepared by the chef. We were treated with much more respect throughout the shoot. There were not crazy people running around stressed out of their minds calling people to the set. It was a much more relaxed and enjoyable environment. And then the storm hit. It seemed like a peaceful day at first. We were in southern California where the weather is almost always sunny and warm. However, on this particular day, the wind picked up to high speeds and started to blow the set over. We were shooting a scene in a park, and there were fake trees that were balanced on large wooden planks. They were real trees, but they had been cut off at the roots and nailed to plank boards so they could move them around on set. So when the wind picked up, they started to rock and one of them fell over. There was a little girl who stood underneath a tree when it began to fall and one of the other extras noticed this. He saw the danger she was in, so he rushed to her aid. He sprinted to the tree and grabbed her. He pulled her out from under the tree just before it fell on top of her. She would have been killed or seriously injured had she been under that tree when it fell. He saved her life and was the hero for the day. There were news cameras that came on set to interview him. He was heralded by the cast and crew for his heroic deed. It would have been a pretty big mess if a little girl were killed on set. The unfortunate thing about all of this is they rescheduled the set for a day that I was not available. I really wanted to be a part of that shoot. It would have given me some good screen time, as I was placed front and center behind the lead actor for this scene. People watching this movie would have seen me on film. But since they filmed it on a different day, and I could not make it that day, I missed out on that opportunity. But I still was there for that experience and it is always a fun one to tell. As an extra, I had quite a few unique and different experiences. I was on set for quite a few different TV shows, got to meet quite a few famous actors and actresses, and I learned a lot about what goes on behind the scenes. It was pretty exciting for a little while, but after a few months of this, I realized it was not all that great. I did not like being treated like a number or like just another member of a huge cattle call, so I decided to move on to bigger and better things. But at the time, it was pretty fun and exciting. It was extremely easy, too. I had a lot of free time to listen to music, read books, etc. We were on call, but we were sent to a waiting room or tent until they called us. We would all be there waiting for most of the day. Some shoot days lasted over 12 hours, and they would only use us for a few minutes of it. Sometimes we would be on set for a couple of hours, other times only half an hour. So the rest of the day, I would pull out my CDs and start studying all kinds of different music, or read some new challenging and informative book. I used that time to study and learn as much as I could. It was a perfect job for a student who needed time to study but also needed to make a living. The pay was not great, but at least I was getting paid to study. There are a lot of different jobs in television, and some are more exciting than others. Many people get involved as crew members, directors, musicians, or other behind-the-scenes positions. Their jobs can be hectic at times, but can also be very rewarding. When they make a great product, they all celebrate together for having finished it well. So if you are interested in a TV job, you might want to get a feel for what you are getting yourself into before you commit to anything big. |
